The First Waterfall a spectacular 80-m drop

>> Tuesday, December 4, 2007

Halfway down the canyon to the first waterfall, you are treated to a truly spectacular view: the water thunders over the high cliff and bounces once in the upper third before dropping straight into the base pool 80 m below. The pool is rather shallow, and swimming is not really possible, but it is sufficient to splash around in. Once you are there, note the typical hexagonal structures of hardened lava on the eastern cliff. On Sundays quite a number of people are here, mainly friendly youngsters.

The Second Waterfall Good swimming

The base pool of this fall is wonderful for swimming, and you’ll be glad if you have brought a picnic basket, despite the slightly difficult terrain.

The Third Waterfall An overgrown waterfall by the edge of the forest

The third fall is higher up, a walk of perhaps forty-five minutes from the road. The path leads above and past the second fall. Visitors are rare and the surroundings delightful.

The fall is overgrown with vegetation, and behind it the mountain forest extends over the slopes. This is a wonderful picnic spot away from it all. You might also want to go a bit farther up river from the fall and dangle your feet in the cool water. More waterfalls are deep in the forest, but to get there you would need a bush knife, sturdy shoes, and a lot of time.

For your return, take the trail on the other side of the valley and stroll comfortably downhill until the two valley trails connect just above the second fall. From here, follow the trail back to the road.
